Our History

The seeds of the English Education can be traced in establishment of F. G. A. V. School in the year 1870 by late H. H. Shrimant Chintamanrao Raghunathrao alias Balasaheb Patwardhan. Initially the school provided education up to Marathi 4th standard and English medium up to 2nd standard. In 1892 schooling went up to 5th standard.
In the year 1925 late H. H. Shrimant Bhalchandrarao alias Annasaheb Patwardhan Sr. established Sitabai Patwardhan High School in the memory of his grandmother. Through this high school, doors of education were opened not only for Kurundwad residents but also for the vicinity of Kurundwad. The royal family was very much fond of providing highest standard education and used to closely oversee the progress of the school.

Immediately after the merger of the State in March 1948 in the then Bombay State, the Royal family took over the responsibility of the school. During 1944 to 1948 the State had entrusted the responsibility of running the school to an elected representative of Ministry. During this period Late Shri Shankararao Hariharrao, the elected Minister took the responsibility of the school, and he progressed it. In 1948, the State Govt. declared that they will be continuing the secondary school only as a transit arrangement till a local institution takes it over.

On 25th July 1948 a meeting was organized on behalf of the residents of Kurundwad and it was chaired by Late Diwan Bahaddur, L. P. Kulkarni in which the decision of approaching the State Govt. for running the high school was taken. Even after the protracted correspondence and follow up the State government declined the request and offered to hand over the secondary school to any organized local body.

In the month of May 1951, S. P. High School’s Silver Jubilee was celebrated. On this occasion, a few education lovers and the past students at the high school took the lead and held a meeting under the Chairmanship of Late. Vinayakrao D. Paranjpe in which an interim committee of 22 members was constituted. These members contributed Rs. 50 each and the Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, (SPM) Kurundwad came into being. The Mandal was registered on the 24th of December 1951. Right from its inception, the SPM received royal patronage. The residents of Kurundwad also responded graciously for providing the required financial support.
